As you know, ACT! for America has begun a nationwide grassroots lobbying campaign to help secure passage of the "Libel Terrorism Protection Act."

The "Libel Terrorism Protection Act" has been introduced in the New York Assembly and Senate. Its objective is as important as it is simple -- protect New York authors and publishers from lawsuits filed in foreign court jurisdictions that are intended to intimidate and silence exposure of terrorism and enablers of terrorism.

Why New York? Because it's the publishing capital of America.

Why now? Because people like Saudi billionaire Khalid Salim bin Mahfouz are using courts in foreign jurisdictions, where free press and speech rights do not have the same protection as they do in the United States, to win libel lawsuits against American authors and publishers. Bin Mahfouz has filed dozens of such lawsuits, and in the face of those suits, numerous American authors and publishers have chosen to apologize, issue retractions and pull books from the market, rather than spend millions in legal fees fighting the suits.

Why is this important? First, because our cherished rights of free speech and press are under assault. Second, if libel terrorism is not stopped, more and more American authors and publishers will be afraid to write and publish works that expose terrorism and its enablers -- and that will undermine our national security.

On Monday, we sent out an email like this urging all of our members and supporters to contact the New York legislature. Today we are asking you to sign the petition and forward it to everyone you know.

We want New York legislators to know that people across America understand how important and necessary this bill is, because all of America will be affected by what the New York state legislature does -- or does not do.

This issue may not seem as important as some other issues related to terrorism.

But make no mistake -- this is a very, very important issue for us to fight for. We're fighting for the rights that make our very freedom possible. To allow individuals around the world the power to control what American authors write about the issue of terrorism is to take a giant step toward surrendering to Islamic terrorism. We cannot allow this to happen.
