Update On The Libel Terrorism Protection
Legislation in New York

There have been some exciting developments regarding the status of the Libel Terrorism Protection Act that has been introduced in the New York Assembly and Senate.

As you recall, the bill has been crafted to protect authors and journalists from libel suits filed in courts in foreign jurisdictions. These suits are typically intended to intimidate and/or silence authors and journalists writing and reporting about terrorism.

Recently The Authors Guild, the nation's largest society of published authors with over 9,000 members, sent a letter to the original sponsors of the bill, Assemblyman Lancman and Senator Skelos, expressing its enthusiastic support for the legislation.

In addition, Robert Morgenthau, District Attorney of the County of New York, also sent a letter to Lancman and Skelos expressing his strong support for the legislation.

Many of you, nearly 6,500 of you, have signed our petition urging the New York legislature to pass this critically important piece of legislation. We would like to add as many more names as possible in the next few days before we submit the petition.
