Vote S2005 -- 185This amendment sought to allocate funds for certain terrorism prevention activities, including rail and transit security. It was narrowly defeated. ACT! for America supports this amendment. A vote in favor of this amendment is in agreement with the position of ACT! for America. Vote S2005 -- 203This amendment sought to stop U.S. corporations from financing terrorism through offshore subsidiaries that do business with state sponsors of terrorism. The amendment was defeated by a narrow margin. ACT! for America supports this amendment. A vote in favor of this amendment is in agreement with the position of ACT! for America. Vote S2005 -- 249This amendment called for a strict set of standards to regulate the detention and interrogation practices employed by the United States in dealing with terrorist enemy combatants. The standards called for prohibiting “cruel, inhuman or degrading" practices as defined by the UN Convention Against Torture. The net effect of the amendment was to give notice to terrorists regarding our interrogation methods, as well as limiting those methods, which could lead to better training for resistance by terrorists. The amendment passed overwhelmingly. ACT! for America opposes this amendment. A vote against this amendment is in agreement with the position of ACT! for America. Vote S2005 -- 309This amendment called for the establishment of an independent commission to investigate and evaluate the policies and practices used on suspected terrorists detained by the United States. The very existence of such a commission would likely provide propaganda for our enemies and undermine our ability to effectively interrogate suspected terrorists. The amendment was defeated by a narrow margin. ACT! for America opposes this amendment. A vote against this amendment is in agreement with the position of ACT! for America. Vote S2005 -- 324This amendment called for judicial review of detained enemy combatants and provided for due process rights such as the right to petition for habeas corpus in U.S. civil courts rather than before military tribunals. It had the effect of treating suspected terrorists as criminals with due process rights of American citizens, rather than as enemy combatants who have been captured during a time of war. The amendment was narrowly defeated. ACT! for America opposes this amendment. A vote against this amendment is in agreement with the position of ACT! for America. Vote S2006 -- 29This is the final version (the House-Senate conference report) of the re-authorization of the PATRIOT Act. It passed overwhelmingly. ACT! for America supports this legislation. A vote for this legislation is in agreement with the position of ACT! for America. Vote S2006 -- 172This amendment sought to establish assistance to pro-democracy forces in Iran through various radio and media programs promoting democracy and reform. The amendment also called for sanctions against foreign governments and companies that invest more than $20 million in Iran's energy sector. The amendment was narrowly defeated. ACT! for America supports this amendment. A vote in favor of this amendment is in agreement with the position of ACT! for America. Vote S2006 -- 177This amendment commended the government of Iraq for affirming its position not to grant amnesty to terrorists who attack U.S. armed forces. Vote S2006 -- 178This amendment sought to express the sense of the Congress that the government of Iraq should not grant amnesty to persons known to have attacked, killed, or wounded members of the Armed Forces of the United States. The amendment passed overwhelmingly. ACT! for America supports this amendment. A vote in favor of this amendment is in agreement with the position of ACT! for America. Vote S2006 -- 182This amendment called for a sense of the Congress that the situation in Iraq was unsustainable and that the U.S. should begin a withdrawal of its forces from Iraq. Such a declaration of defeat would have had the effect of emboldening our enemies, not only those terrorists and insurgents in Iraq, but those around the world. The amendment was defeated. Vote S2006 -- 219This legislation would have allowed increased exploration and drilling for oil and natural gas in areas of the Gulf of Mexico. Efforts to increase America's ability to use domestic sources of energy are essential to protecting our national security and reducing our dependence on foreign oil, much of it coming from countries that sponsor or aid terrorism. The bill passed with significant bi-partisan support. ACT! for America supports this legislation. A vote in favor of this legislation is in agreement with the position of ACT! for America. Vote S2006 -- 259This legislation called for the creation of military tribunals to try terrorist enemy combatants, instead of civilian criminal courts.
